This past week, I was talking with a friend of mine who is also vegan and we began discussing how there doesn’t really seem to be a vegan tag out in the world and the ones that kind of exist are the ones that essentially have the same answers across the board. Is it expensive to eat vegan? Do you miss anything? Is eating vegan hard? None of the answers are ever fun and exciting and instead are the standard answers that any who has been vegan for a while answers the same. So I thought, why don’t I come up with a fun vegan tag? One that actually asks interesting questions and lets you get a real feel for what it is like to be a vegan. I will have the standard questions of how long, why, and family but after that, it is utter chaos. And thus, I present you, THE VEGAN TAG! Feel free to tag your friends so we can really spread this and get some funny responses!
How long have you been vegan?
I have been vegan since October, 2015, so I will be celebrating my veganiversary very soon.
Why did you go vegan?
Now that is a very long story that I may save for another time. Let me know in the comments if you would like me to do a separate post about this and I will be more than willing but for now let’s just settle for the broad answer of for a medical reason.
What does your family and friends think about you being vegan?
The easiest way for me to do this question is to break it down into several different sections. Here we go:
Sister – My younger sister was a bit apprehensive when I first decided to make this change because a friend of hers went vegan and only eats fruit in seeds and dropped a dangerous amount of weight. She believed vegans to be very hippy dippy granola crunching people. However, this quickly changed after I made Oh She Glows’s Enchiladas and a batch of my vegan chocolate chip cookies for the whole family.
Dad – my dad is fairly indifferent. It’s not that he ignores it in anyway he just wants me to be healthy and happy and whatever way I can do that is a perfect idea to him. He also enjoys getting to be my test subject for new recipes I make as well as trying different vegan restaurants.
Mom – My mom is very supportive of me but she does worry about protein intake on occasion. However, instead of forcing me to change she has simply gone out and done her own research. She has even gone as far as to speak with different nutritionists about different recipes and what are vegan alternatives.
I feel very fortunate to have such a supportive family as I do. And even though my change was abrupt and they had no idea how long this decision would last for, my entire extended family rallied together and hade one of the best vegan Thanksgiving you could imagine only after I had only been vegan a little over two months.
What are your favorite vegan specialty products?
Right now I am really loving So Delicious’s Salted Caramel Cluster ice cream, Vegenaise, and Earth Balance’s Mac & Cheese. But I could go on forever. Once I discover a new vegan product that I like, it’s pretty much in my favorites for life.
Are there any vegan specialty products you don’t like?
I feel like this is a very common thing in the vegan world, either you love Daiya cheese or you hate it. I just can’t… It’s not only the taste that gets me, it’s the consistency of it. It practically becomes like gum in your mouth. I can’t.
What is your favorite vegan joke/slam a non-vegan has said to you?
My dad has probably the oddest humor you have ever heard so he definitely takes the cake for the best joke. Being from Wisconsin, he loves all dairy and since I made the transition my entire family has cut out all regular milk from our house, which has led my dad to saying, excuse the language, “You tell me where the tits on an almond are”. The best part of this exchange was that there are loads of memes out there about milking almonds. But I have slowly been converting him until he now loves Ben & Jerry’s vegan Coffee Caramel Fudge ice cream
What is the most desperate vegan moment you have ever had?
Hmmm…. I once took a spoon directly into a jar of hummus because I had nothing to dip in it and I didn’t feel like cooking. It was probably a really strange but funny sight to see in all honesty.
What is the one vegan related question that makes your brain short circuit?
Definitely ‘do you eat chicken?’ which I have been asked on several occasions. The ‘do you eat fish?’ one I kind of understand but I don’t know what it is about a chicken that separates it from all other creatures. I swear every time I’m asked this question my brain goes off line for a second and I can’t even answer.
What is your funniest experience at a vegan restaurant with a non-vegan?
Kind of a call back to my dislike for Daiya cheese, my mom and I went to a restaurant to try out a vegan pizza once, not knowing that Daiya was used on it. I took a bite, my mom took a bite and she commenced to say, “I feel like I’m eating glue”. I started to choke on my piece and my mom started laughing. Our waiter thought we were insane. We did end up scraping all of the cheese off the pizza and eating just the veggies, crust, and sauce. It was a pretty good pizza once we got past its major downfall.
What is your favorite vegan restaurant and meal to eat?
Now this one is a tie for me. It is between Pizza Lucé and the Fiction Kitchen. Pizza Lucé’s vegan pizzas are the best ones I have ever tasted and with their homemade rinotta… Absolute perfection. If I would have to pick a favorite meal from there, it would have to be the rustler pizza with rinotta cheese. Fiction Kitchen is my other favorite and since I am in the south chicken and waffles is a staple and Fiction Kitchen has the best vegan version. I mean… I have dreams about this meal!
