There are a lot of things that go into living a full and healthy life. No matter what anyone says, changing one area of your daily routine will not help a whole lot unless you combine it with several other changes. You can’t simply eat healthy, work out occasionally, or use more earth-friendly products. You have to do all three regularly and continue to build your own pyramid of wellness from there to begin seeing results in not only yourself but everything around you.
Eating clean is one of the most important foundations for your overall health. If you don’t provide your body with natural and whole foods to fuel it, your body can’t run properly and nothing else you do will be as beneficial. You may even hinder your performance if you do not eat more highly processed foods.
If you don’t know where to start when shopping for these foods, begin in the outside aisles of your grocery store. The only things that you should go within the inside aisles for are nuts, seeds, and rice.
Ask yourself: Could I grow or harvest this? If so, it’s a clean food.
This is not to say that you can never indulge or eat highly processed foods. Just do so sparingly. Treat processed foods or recipes with several processed ingredients as a recipe for special occasions. And even then, there are loads of different ways to clean up a recipe so it tastes just as good but cuts out all the extra, less natural ingredients.
Sir Isaac Newton was right when he said an object at rest will stay at rest. If you continuously do not get up and moving, you are much more likely to make unhealthy decisions. However, if you are moving and getting exercise you will not only feel better physically but mentally as well.
During exercise, no matter if it’s an intense workout or just walking your dog, your body produces serotonin which is a key ingredient in feeling happy. Even if you don’t feel like singing a song at the end of your workout, doesn’t mean it didn’t work. Rarely do people finish a workout or exercise and think, I wish I hadn’t done that.
Like I said before, getting in your daily exercise does not have to painful or formal by any means. It can be as simple as playing a game of basketball, walking around the neighborhood, even dancing in your room. It doesn’t matter. As long as it’s something you enjoy, you will be able to stick with it a lot longer than if you dislike it. And the longer you keep up with it, the more benefits you will have.
Together with food choices, these two can have a snowball effect that once you get going everything else in your life will continue to get healthier and better for you.
Now this one may seem a bit counterintuitive after the last section, but rest is just as important as exercise. If you are consistently running at 110%, you will burn out. It isn’t a matter of if, but a matter of when. And when you finally burn out whether it’s physical, mental, or even emotional, it will take you a lot longer to get back to where you were.
Although most would consider rest to be sitting around or lying down, that is not necessarily correct. There is such a thing as more proactive rest as well.
Taking a warm bath
Making a nice meal
Even taking a walk can be considered rest. Anything that allows you to get out of your head for a short amount of time and decompress is beneficial.
Although you may feel as though you have no time, you need to find the time for yourself because every part of you inside and out needs this time. Especially after major events, projects, or training, you need to be able to take a breath before starting up again. Work hard and then rest well. Be aware of your breaking points. Really begin listening to your body and learn the indicators that you are getting burnt out and take care of yourself.
Out of all of the levels on this pyramid, this one is possibly the hardest. There is no sure fire way of handling stress. No miracle cure or one way to do it. How stress is managed all depends on the person and what they prefer to do.
If I reach a certain level of stress, my threshold, I completely shut down. I won’t be productive. I’ll snap at people. It isn’t good for anyone involved. When I reach this point, I have learned that I need to just go sleep. Nothing has been able to reset me as well as this does.
But even though I have learned how to do this after I am stressed, I still struggle with how to deal with stress on a day to day basis.
Everyone, including myself, needs to learn to take a step back and a deep breath before re-addressing something that is stressing them out. So take that deep breath and really try to find a way to handle all the stress that can build up in just one day. If you are able to do this, your body and mind will definitely thank you.
REDUCE TOXIC OVERLOAD
In essence, this is what this blog is all about. Reducing the different forms of toxicity in your day to day life. Whether it is from people or actual products. Both can have an equally strong effect on your wellness and are simply not needed in your life.
Getting rid of people who do not support you or are constantly dragging you down is sometimes difficult or not always an option. But if you tell this person directly how they are making you feel, often times they will understand and try to change their ways. If they do not, creating boundaries between you and them can help reduce the negative impact they have on you.
In terms of toxic products, I can not reiterate enough to check the ingredients’ list on the back. Although you may have used the product for years does not necessarily mean it is good for you. There are a variety of programs and apps available for free that allows you to input ingredients or even the products name to see what potentially harmful side effects the ingredients may have.
Although this list may seem overwhelming and that you may never be able to accomplish it, trust me when I say you can do it. These changes do not need to happen all at once. You didn’t form these habits in one day so you can’t expect yourself to break them in one day either. Even just one change a week will make a huge difference for you and before you know it you will be living a clean and healthy life.
